Baltimore and Toronto established electric rail-less operations as experiments on two routes with the goal to spur enough development to eventually convert to streetcar operations. The first generation of Rail-Less vehicles, also known as Trolley Coaches, or Trackless Trolleys resembled a trolley car than an electric bus. Initially, these vehicles operated from Jackson Depot, located on 16th Street, between Jackson and Wolf Streets, but the operation was relocated to Southern Depot in Southern Depot located on Johnston Street, between 19th and 20th Street , housed trolleys that served several crosstown and north-south lines and the facility had the space to store and maintain trackless vehicles. Ridership gradually grew as Route 80 connected South Philadelphia neighborhoods on either side of Broad Street and several north-south trolley routes to Center City and points north and west. These primitive vehicles were eventually retired and more modern, comfortable vehicles were acquired in November Trackless service on Route 80 operated unchanged for 25 years until the coaches were replaced by diesel buses on May 15, In , PRT’s trustees attempted to reduce operating expenses and capital costs by proposing the conversion of Route 61 from a double-ended streetcar to trolley coach.

In the years following the war, the western suburbs of Philadelphia grew at a tremendous rate. This growth and prosperity prompted the order for a group of 14 multiple-unit streamlined rail cars. While these cars are equipped with the same high-speed running gear as the Brilliners, they also have multiple unit capabilities can be coupled together in pairs and two-way radios.
These important features were required to expand service along the rapidly developing West Chester line, which operated on single track over the majority of its mile length. Cars 14 and 24 were withdrawn from regular service in September following acceptance of 29 new LRVs. Louis-built cars were selected for preservation here at the Museum because they will demonstrate the operation of streetcars in multiple unit.

Woolworths has pledged to stamp out underpayment of workers in its supply chain. Woolworths will also ensure records of its contractor workforce are accurately maintained and will audit its contractors annually. In , a FWO inquiry found contractors at a staggering 79 per cent of the Woolworths stores visited by the regulator in were in violation of workplace laws. Advertisement Under the deed, Woolworths will continue to use the contractor model, which relies on outsourcing trolley collections to contractors and sub-contractors, rather than bringing its trolley collectors inhouse like its chief competitor Coles.
Under Woolworths’ deed with FWO, trolley contractors providing services to Woolworths will ensure its contractors use biometric sign-ons for employees — such as fingerprint sign ons — or geo-fencing capabilities — which tracks whether an employee is on site during their reported shift. Contractors will also be issued with photo identification through Woolworths’ contract management system. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the deed was the result of “widespread exploitation” and Woolworths’ signing the deed showed that while contractors were primarily responsible for payment of workers, in a supply chain the accountability went all the way to the top.
Our inquiry found that Woolworths’ existing governance systems were not effective in addressing these issues, contributing to a culture of non-compliance by its contractors. Natalie James, Fair Work Ombudsman “With Australia’s two largest supermarket retailers now accepting a moral and ethical responsibility for ensuring the trolley collectors on their sites are being treated fairly regardless of who their employer is, we hope that rampant underpayment of this vulnerable cohort becomes a thing of the past.
